Not all job descriptions are created equal

Job descriptions or position descriptions (PD) are more than just a document; they are an integral element of an effective HR structure. They summarise what the purpose of a role is, what it is accountable for achieving and how those achievements are to be measured. The tasks and duties of the job description are how a role achieves its purpose.

Now, we do know what the effects are.

Technology continues to change our lives, including our working lives, at increasing pace. Automation, robotics and artificial intelligence have already significantly changed and will continue to change the nature of work – both the mix of tasks within existing jobs and the mix of jobs that will exist in future. Technology will also continue to change how and where we work, and how work is organised.

  • Defensible
  • Transparent (some more than others)
  • Affordable
Achieving this in good times is a challenge and when the going gets tough, it becomes even harder. Let’s see what that means.

This article was published in the February Issue of New Zealand Management Magazine.

Our Strategic Pay Senior Consultant, Christine Whelan examines the debate around salary increases being based on CPI and why this may not be the best idea.

Let’s forget for a moment the fact that CPI doesn’t always move positively and consistently upwards – over the last 5 years it’s ranged between 0.5% and 2.5%, while the remuneration market movement has remained at a reasonably steady 2 – 3%. Remuneration market movements, since they inevitably reflect employers’ ability to pay, already take into account CPI, while not being driven solely by it.
